Josephine Starrs creates and exhibits media art projects for national and international audiences. She is a cofounder of the influential artist group VNS Matrix and was a senior lecturer at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney until 2016.
Her long-term collaboration with artist Leon Cmielewski has produced art installations situated at the juncture of cinema, mapping and sublime landscape. Seeker is a media artwork exploring human migration and asylum, winning an award of distinction at Ars Electronica in 2007.
Their installation Incompatible Elements, focusing on landscapes in crisis due to climate change has been shown several times in Australia and internationally, including the Maldives Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2013. Their immersive audiovisual artwork, and the earth sighed, re-imagines the relationship between nature and culture and was featured in the 2019 Adelaide Festival of Arts.
Starrs is passionate about presenting the land and oceans as spectacular living organisms and showing the impact of human intervention on fragile environments.
