Fernando Póyon
Born & Lives in:
Guatemala (Maya Kaqchikel)

Fernando Poyón, a Maya Kaqchikel visual artist, was born in Comalapa, Guatemala, a town known for its strong Kaqchikel artistic traditions, agriculture, and weaving. Poyón’s work explores the shifting dynamics within Indigenous communities and global contemporary art, viewed through social, cultural, historical, and political lenses. He critically examines the creators of new cultural forms, their motivations, and their audiences. His practice embodies both resistance and affirmation of Indigenous values, exploring geopolitical relationships through symbolic elements like maps, flags, pencils, and urban landscapes — human-constructed emblems that define our interactions and identities in the contemporary world.
