Edgar Calel
Born & Lives in:
Guatemala (Chi Xot / San Juan Comalapa)

Born in Chi Xot (San Juan Comalapa), Guatamala, Calel’s practice draws deeply from his Indigenous heritage, integrating traditional ceremonies, cosmology and collective memory into installations, performances, and participatory art. He creates dialogues between different cultural systems, using symbolic materials like corn, candles, and family objects to address spirituality, cultural identity, and the ongoing effects of colonisation. Through poetic interventions that honour his community’s traditions, Calel challenges systemic exclusion while celebrating the resilience and continuity of Mayan worldviews. His work invites viewers to engage deeply with Indigenous knowledge systems, creating connections between past and present.
