Chen Chieh-jen
Born & Lives in:
Taiwan R.O.C.

Born in 1960 in Taoyuan, Taiwan, Chen Chieh-jen is a Taipei-based artist whose work explores the impact of corporatocracy and technological control on contemporary society. Since 2010, he has focused on the global shift toward temporary employment and the resulting loss of individual agency, referring to this condition as “global imprisonment” or “at-home exile.” Drawing on Buddhist philosophy, he examines how desire can be transformed, and illusion can be challenged using māyā—a concept that questions the deceptive nature of reality. Through his practice, Chen seeks to reimagine the possibilities for resistance and change in an era of pervasive surveillance and automation.
