“This Assembly exists because current forms of political, social and media organisation are insufficient to name and transform the violences we are living through.
“This Assembly is convened in order to redistribute the floor.”
Estado De Asamblea (State of Assembly) is a new transdisciplinary performance work and civic ritual by celebrated Argentine artist Gabriela Golder.
Taking over Marrickville Town Hall, Estado De Assembly enacts a democratic summit for women and gender diverse contributors to discuss some of the most prescient issues of our age from a feminist perspective; from labour rights to climate collapse; from the rising tide of fascism to the crisis of gendered violence.
Fusing lively public debate, motions and resolutions, musical interludes, choral performances, live camera activity, and excerpts of texts (from literary and judicial texts to artistic and political manifestos), Estado De Assembly is a pluralistic act of collective imagining. It is an inter-generational, participatory search for alternative ways of living and a more just and equitable world.
Responding to the assembly state, a characteristic form of organization in Argentina, and to historically entrenched structures of power, Estado De Assembly invites all audiences to bear witness to a respectful but rigorous democratic process, and encourages all women and gender diverse folk present to participate in the assembly’s process of discussion and voting.
