Wendy Hubert is a respected Yindjibarndi Elder, cultural custodian, artist and linguist. Born at Red Hill Station on Guruma Country, Hubert lived at Red Hill Station, Minderoo Station and Onslow before settling in Roebourne. She began painting with Juluwarlu Art Group in 2019 and has become a dedicated artist known for her landscape paintings recounting scenes from her childhood and featuring important places on Yindjibarndi and Guruma Country. In a powerful testament to her artistic journey, Hubert reflects: “I know my Ngurra. I know its Laws. I am a Yindjibarndi Custodian, old now, but strong in my thinking and my life.” (2021)

A riotous celebration of ancestral knowledge, Yindjibarndi Elder, Wendy Hubert, brings the bright skies, rich colours and verdant foliage of her painting practice to life. Based on Yindjibarndi Country, Hubert is an artist, cultural custodian and linguist who carries botanical knowledge passed down through generations. While ecological disruptions fuelled by the changing climate has meant some plants are no longer represented on Yindjibarndi Country, knowledge of them endures.
Through this work, Hubert celebrates the resilience of this ancestral knowledge by focusing on native plants used for eating, medicine, ceremonial purposes and artefact.
Yindjibarndi Nyinyart at Wendy’s Garden tells the story of the five principles by which her people have lived in harmony with Country for thousands of years. These principles are: Ngurra (Home), Wangga (Truth, Language), Galharra (Kinship), Birdarra (Ceremony) and Nyinyart (Reciprocity).
For Hubert, Wendy’s Garden “is so much more than just a garden. It shows us our past, and the path ahead. It is a web of stories from my Ngurra, my home…these plants are food, medicine, part of our family and our identity as Yindjibarndi people. They represent principles and tell stories that are vital to our lives and our cultural future.”
