Lupa J burst onto the Australian music scene at age 15, immediately garnering praise from international music blogs such as DIY Magazine – receiving a Triple J Unearthed High nomination for two years running. After a few years solidifying their original electro-pop sound & live show with the likes of Sarah Blasko, Grimes, Tegan & Sara and Alice Glass, they released their debut LP ‘Swallow Me Whole’ in 2019. A bold, self-produced record about discovering and celebrating their own queerness, it earned a nomination for the Australian Music Prize and FBi Radio’s SMAC Awards for ‘Album of the Year’.
In 2022, Lupa released their LP ‘A New Kind of Magic’. The album received high praise from presenters at BBC Radio 1 and Triple J, with Tommy Faith from Triple J calling ‘Always Wanting’ a ‘near perfect pop song’ & Declan Byrne insisting they should be playing ‘festivals all around Australia’. They have now cultivated a loyal, community-like fan base around them in Melbourne, playing a packed album launch event at Miscellania, and sets at Dark Mofo 2022, Gaytimes, Brisbane Powerhouse with Nakhane, the National Portrait Gallery, and Now or Never with Alice Longyu Gao.
